The Amrun project will extend mining activities at Rio Tinto’s site south of the Embley River between Weipa and Aurukun.

It includes the construction of a range of infrastructure to support mining, including a processing plant and port near Boyd Bay, a dam, a tailings storage facility, roads and a ferry terminal on the Hey River to transport workers from Weipa to the mine.

Decmil engaged Monford to complete detailed earthworks and concrete works for the construction of buildings in the Mine Infrastructure Area (MIA). These buildings include a workshop, heavy mine equipment (HME) refuelling station, HME maintenance wash, HME body wash, warehouse and workshop, water truck fill, lube plant, tyre change, administration, emergency services, light vehicle (LV) wash and crib and amenities.

Scope of work

  • Detailed excavation for main foundations, underground services, slabs, pits and drains (6,424 m3)
  • Detailed backfill to foundations, sediment pits, ground slabs and drains (3,516 m3)
  • Foundation preparation and compaction (7,444 m2)
  • Final trimming
  • Installation of concrete blinding (1,441 m2)
  • Supply and installation of formwork, temporary props and bracing
  • Install cast-in rails, including temporary steel supports
  • Installation of reinforcement (220 tonnes)
  • Installation of dowel joints, isolation joints, control joints (1,425m)
  • Installation of waterproof membrane
  • Placement, finishing, curing and protection of concrete (5,318m3)
  • Installation of joint sealant and backing materials
